The church interior location for this portrait painting provided an excellent and interesting backdrop for the figure. There were many vestment/colour options. It was mutually agreed that the green vestment with the complementary red under-layer of the sleeves worked well, akin to small areas of red in Constable landscapes offsetting the greens.
